UNBROKEN

Unbroken was directed in 2014 by Angelina Jolie.

The film begins with a view of childhood of Italian, Louis Zamperini (Jack O'Connel) who finds something that he's good at - running. He has been dedicating himself to this sport for years. As a young man he won at the Olympic Games. During Second World War he signs up to Air Force. Unfortunately one of his mission ends with an accident, plane falls down into the ocean. From the crew only Louis and two of his friends stay alive. They have been drifting in pontoons for a long time. They were found by the crew of Japanese ship and taken prisoner to POW (prisoner-of-war) camp. On of Louis'es friends was killed and the other one was separated from him. Now Zamperini is alone among hundreds of other prisoners and sadistic Japanese soldiers. He has to work hard in inhuman conditions, he's malnourished and maltreated by his butchers. In the camp there is a commander called Takamasa Ishihara (Mutsushiro Watanabe) who is doing everything to break Louis down but he doesn't give up. He was punched in the face by every prisoner and stood still each time, he had to hold very heavy log above his head all day and he didn't drop it. One day Louis organises a spurt among prisoners and leads them out of the camp. They are found by American soldiers and they can come back home.

What's the point in never giving up? He risked his life, he was aware of that he could stay in the POW camp till death, probably imminent death. But the point in never giving up is trying because if you don't try you will never know if it was worth trying. There's no life without taking risk. You have to believe in yourself, stay strong, no matter what do you want to achieve. You have to be... Unbroken.

Oh hey, I'm floating above the world now"

MY NAME IS KHAN

A little bit of oriental music

"My name is Khan" is the film from 2010 directed by Karan Johar.

Rizwan Khan, played by famous indian actor Shah Rukh Khan, Indian muslim who suffers from Asperger syndrome, is a bit overreacting and has problems with interpersonal relations. He wants to cross the boundary in New York but because of his illness and descent he's perceived as a terrorist. He becomes one of the suspects in the issue of recent attacks in New York. Khan feels ofended, he believs that his mission is to meet with president and explain him that he's not a terrorist. He doesn't realize that this is not that simple and he's really determined to do it. He starts his journey in order to find the way to meet the head of state. He doesn't expect that on the way he will find something else.

Rizwan meets Mandira - lonely mother. She doesn't care about his illness, she sees all of the beauty and good in him. They fall in love with each other. Khan's mission is relegated into the background but he promises Mandira that he'll do his best to finish what he has started because he still has problems due to suspicions of terroristic attacks. When it comes to serious misunderstanding which splits lovers apart, Rizwan decides to complete his mission because he believes that it can change everything. He wants to fight for his and other imigrant's rights. It's unbelievable but he finally meets president and says frequently repeated, simple words: 'My name is Khan and I'm not a terrorist".

Why was it so important for Khan to justify himself? Well, white-skinned, Christian, American citizen with full rights could say that he's fed up with all those divisions, labels, disjustice, inequality and it's ok if he thinks so but who's the one that is most fed up with this? Who's ofended for real? The one who's perceived as a stranger, intruder. The one who's black-skinned, imigrant, muslim or homosexual. My vision of perfect world is the world in which no matter who you are - black, white, Christian, muslim, Jude, gay, straight and no matter where you are, you just feel like you're at home. Because everyone everywhere should be entitled to feel good, accepted, to lead a normal life.

FURY

SOUNDTRACK BY STEVEN PRICE

>>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lvif2p4E_c <<<

"Fury" is the film from 2014 directed by David Ayer.
Second World War, the group of four different characters connected by those cruel experiences, more or less ruthless, crew of a tank called "Fury", soldiers fighting with one of the biggest then enemy - Germans. Commanding officer - Don "Wardaddy" Collier played by Brad Pitt, gunner - Boyd "Bible" Swan played by Shia LaBeouf, loader - Grady "Coon-Ass" Travis played by John Bernthal and driver - Trini "Gordo" Garcia played by Michael Pena. After coming back from a mission they learn about that young man, Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman), who's in army since few hours, is attached to their team. They accept him unwillingly.

Norman doesn't even want to be there, he never wanted to have to do with war, he's an oposition of Don's crew which is accustomed to cruel reality, sight of death, they heave learned how to kill. In the beggining they treat their new companion as a weakling, but in fact they want to help him survive the war, teach him how to become more indifferent. They're going through Germany carrying out their orders and of course trying not to die. The film ends with an epic scene in which they defend themselves in a tank against about 200 German soldiers. Everyone from the crew dies except Norman.

Well, it's not like I enjoy watching bloody, violent films because in "Fury" that's not what it's all about. This film perfectly shows war's true colors. The war is about making decision - kill or die. Before First and Seond World War people who became soldiers then didn't expect that they could ever kill anyone. Nobody's born a soldier. Human is pure and good in his nature, he feels, he has a hope, he's able to love, he believes in something, he has his moral values. Then suddenly something terrible happens and his world becomes destroyed, everything that he has believed in is pushed into the background and he has to cope with evil which is often beyond his reach. As I said, war is about making decisions - fight for my and other's freedom or give up and be influenced by people who will treat me like a trash, who wolud kill me in cold blood. Violence breeds violence, hate breeds hate and hate is one of the most determining factor when it comes to kill the enemy. And 'the enemy' is a label without which war wouldn't exist. One thing is sure - if nobody had fight for his and our freedom we wouldn't live in the same world that we live now.

Here's the composition that I like the most and which made me shiver when I was watching, I had a feeling inside, feeling I can't even describe but I was totally moved.

THE GREEN MILE

"The Green Mile" definately isn't as nice and pleasant as Fred Astaires song which is in the soundtrack.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrCsyN-fZ94

The film was directed in 1999 by Frank Darabont. It's a retrospection of retired prison guard, Paul Edgecombe, played by one of my favourite actors - Tom Hanks, who tells his friend story about a prisoner that he met when he worked in prison called Cold Mountain.

This is a story about man who hides the real magic in his heart, so this composition will be perfect.

John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) is black, huge, muscular man who is convicted of murder of two nine-year-old girls. Everybody is scared of him because he looks like a beast. But his behaviour in the prison is strange - he cries, he's scared and as gentle as a lamb. He doesn't display any signs of aggression. Another prison guard, Percy Wetmore (Doug Hutchison), who is really mean and sadistic person, is putting John down and maltreating him. In Cold Mountain the penalty of murder is death penalty consists in putting a wet sponge on the prisoners head, then putting on the machine which electrocutes him. Percy always executes this sentence without soaking the sponge and because of that prisoners die in agony.

John Coffey has supernatural skills, he can heal people and other living creatures, he helps Paul with an inflammation of bladder. He tells guard the story of his life and what's the reason of his arrest. It turns out that he didn't kill those girls and they were victims of another man called Wild Bill. John was only trying to help them using his magical skills but it was too late. He was found with dead girls in his arms and that's why he's accused of a murder. Paul believes him but he can't do anything to change the verdict. He knows that John's time is impending and he spends with him as much time as he can.

The title "green mile" is a metaphor to distance which prisoners had to cover before their Last Judgment.

There are very important words that John says that I'll probably never forget: "I'm rightly tired of the pain I hear and feel, boss. I'm tired of bein' on the road, lonely as a robin in the rain. Not never havin' no buddy to go on with or tell me where we's comin' from or goin' to or why. I'm tired of people bein' ugly to each other. It feels like pieces of glass in my head. I'm tired of all the times I've wanted to help and couldn't. I'm tired of bein' in the dark. Mostly it's the pain. There's too much. If I could end it, I would. But I can't".
This is exactly how we feel like when we realise that the world is filled with evil and we can't do a lot to fix it. But actually that's not the way we should think. It doesn't matter if we save someone's life or do just a small, good thing - we fight with evil, we don't let it win. John Coffey is a kind of an angel that everyone could be, without magical skills. Noble heart, sensitivity, humanness - this is real magic. Many people think that it's called 'weakness'. They're wrong. Empathy is the biggest power in the world.
Due to this and next film, it is said that people who seemingly administer justice are often worse butchers than those whom they judge.

TOTAL ECLIPSE

Before I introduce you to the world of nineteenth century poetry, press 'play' and enjoy the composition created by polish film music composer - Jan Kaczmarek.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djwNcfNy6x4

"Total eclipse" is a marvellous film from 1995 directed by Agnieszka Holland. It's the second example of input of polish artists in worldwide masterpieces. It tells the story of two nineteenth century french poets, young Arthur Rimbaud played by Leonardo Di Caprio who is famous for his roles in "Titanic" or "Romeo and Juliet" and the older one, Paul Verlaine played by David Thewlis, whose we can associate with "Harry Potter".

Arthur Rimbaud was an uderrated poet for a long time, also in real life. The movie shows that he was born in poor family in a village near Paris. He's a young, typical artist, dreamer who have a head in the clouds, his own rules and lifestyle. He's looking for some new experiences, he's spontaneous, full of energy, reckless. Paul Verlaine is his oposition - middle-aged, settled down, married but also a bit unhappy, dissatisfied with his life, he feels some kind of an emptiness in his heart. Despite differences between them, when they meet they take a liking for each other. At the beggining it's just a sympathy which turns into friendship. They spend time together, having fun, small talks and considering more existential problems. They also create together and exchange views related to their poetry. Friendship quickly turns into mutual fascination, including more serious feelings and carnality. Verlaine is impressed by his young friend and gradually falls in love with him. They start to travel around France and some other countries. They feel free and happy but with the passing of time they have less and less money, they live in poor conditions and start to argue with each other. Arthur seems to be bored and angry with his companion, he says that Paul constricts him. Rimbaud leaves his lover, heartbroken man comes back to Paris to his wife. After that, their fortunes entwine few times. Their relations become strange, cold, Paul is desperate, he can't abandon his feelings, Arthur gives him the runaround, he's indifferent to his suffering. He only focuses on his own career.

Difficulties of being in a homosexual relationship shouldn't be the first thing that comes to our mind when we talk about this film because it's just a marginal subject. "Total eclipse" enraptured me beacuse it shows that life of a poet or generally life of an artist isn't the bed of roses. Especially poets, writers are often convicted to live in loneliness, they have their moods, mental problems, they experience everything more intensively, they are hypersensitive, misunderstood. They're full of extremes, on the one hand they can be too self-confident, look down on everyone else, on the other hand there are many artists whose feeling of self-importance is on very low level.

Arthur Rimbaud

"Ma bohème"

I went off with my hands in my torn coat pockets;
My overcoat too was becoming ideal;
I travelled beneath the sky, Muse! and I was your vassal;
Oh dear me! what marvellous loves I dreamed of!
My only pair of breeches had a big whole in them.
– Stargazing Tom Thumb, I sowed rhymes along my way.
My tavern was at the Sign of the Great Bear.
– My stars in the sky rustled softly.
And I listened to them, sitting on the road-sides
On those pleasant September evenings while I felt drops
Of dew on my forehead like vigorous wine;
And while, rhyming among the fantastical shadows,
I plucked like the strings of a lyre the elastics
Of my tattered boots, one foot close to my heart!

INTRO

Hey, hi, hello!

There are some things that taste better when you share them with other people. For me, the best ones are love and art, because both of them cause emotions, and it's something really thrilling when you share emotions with somebody. If we talk about art, especially I like to share music that makes me feel differently, calms me down, hipnotizes me and films that are thought - provoking. So I'll try to piece those two elements together or treat songs from soundtracks like something which can be some kind of a supplement, something that will make my blog complete. Of course movies will be the main subject. Movies that amazed me or even made me cry and made me thinking about them hours, days, weeks after watching.

So let the magic carry us away!
